Fresh Food Market in the LES

Program: Fresh food market and community space
Location: Sara D. Roosevelt Park in the Lower East Side of Manhattan
On our preliminary site visits, we identified that Sara D. Roosevelt Park is centrally located within NYC's bike lane network and near lower Manhattan, an area with high volumes of delivery orders. Additionally, we discovered a lack of infrastructure for food delivery drivers, many of whom rely on bicycles for transportation, and use the park for recreation. In response, we designed our programs to serve cyclists and food delivery workers, recognizing them as underserved populations.
The building responds to the energetic intersection of the site’s circulation flows by capturing, separating, and funneling them through different programs.
The program spaces include a semi-conditioned fresh food market positioned between the sidewalk and the existing park, an event space, administrative offices, and classrooms.
